Right to lock, left to unlock seems to be some sort of standard and is used on most driver doors, except for the ignition switch. With no one willing to help, I tried to pry it open with the button pushed, and no luck. I notice on the 1959 model the key slot is HORIZONTAL when in the unlocked position. I photo of an unlocked trunk button on a 1956 would be much appreciated.
