Loose Steering, Poor Control

Post by Jfleming1997 »

Hi all, and for starters, may I suggest we add steering to this section. Seems like a good fit.
I have a 1954 Imperial, and when I got it it had probably 6 inches of free play in the steering wheel. Suffice to say it was “floaty.”
It drifted quite a bit, there was decidedly a dead spot where you weren’t in direct control. So, I put on all new tie rod ends, and tried to adjust the spur gear endplay. It was VERY hard to turn the screw in tighter, but I know I didn’t overtighten it, because there’s still no binding in the middle, but that screw seems like it won’t budge any further. Could the spur gear be seized on it seals or bearings from age? The car is arguably WORSE to drive now. The dead spot is smaller, maybe 4 inches, but it requires CONSTANT correction. Any ideas to improve this?
