1964 Imperial Conv

Post by Imperial64413 »

Hi. I am brand new to this site. What's the easiest way to use my vin to see what options came on my vehicle that just got delivered yesterday?

Unfortunately anything before 1981 is tough to get info on. Awesome car though! Pics?

There should be a trim tag near the vin tag that has option codes on it. Pictures?

Show us pictures and we can tell you what the car has. It's fairly easy to spot options on a 64: If you see something protruding from the top of the dash, you have an automatic headlight dimmer. If you see a horn ring, you have a tilt wheel. If you have what looks like a silver knob underneath the ignition key area, you have a front/rear speaker switch with reverberator (reverberator only true in 64-other years had the silver knob for speakers but with/without reverb), if you have something marked "Rear Air", turn around and look at the package shelf; if it has a 20 inch slit, you have a blower, if it has two pull up vents that look like the two in front (provided it has ac) then you have true rear ac; if it has a knob next to the ignition key marked "Auto Pilot" then you have cruise control. If your driver's armrest has six power stalks, you have power vents (no, the little white flip switch is not power locks, it is just a window lock that disables the individual switches), if you see a lone stalk all by itself near the forward portion of the area where the window switches are on both front doors, you have power locks. When you reach down to your left (from the driver's seat) you should find a four-finned knob that operates the seat 6 ways (unless its a 2 door, in which case it is a straight knob that only goes 4 ways). Other odd accessories would be a right outside mirror, vinyl top, door edge guards. Dual exhaust came on convertibles but not sedans. If you look inside the glove box and see a silver button on the left, you have a remote trunk release. In my experience finding an Imperial that has been heavily modified with additional options is unusual, but not unheard of. Oh, if your front door pockets have snaps on them and there's an "Imperial" logo in the middle of the windshield trim, you have an early 64.

Agree, I never knew about the Early '64 features. The couple '64s I had must have not have been early 64's.

I've never had an early 1964, either. However I've had 1-59, 2-60's, 1-61, 2-62's, 1-63, 3-64's, 3-65's, 6-66's, 4-67's and 2 68's. All had AC, 3 had Dual AC (my favorite option), 3 had a reverberator and one 68 had the factory AM/FM with the Stereo tape unit under the dash (which was stolen as it was New York City in 1970). Loved them all. Only had to rebuild one steering box, no engines and one transmission. One of the 64's (all were convertibles) came from Fran Oechsner (the guy with 40 64,5,6 convertibles in Horicon, WI)-which I jumped in to and drove from Wisconsin to New York City with no issues. The least expensive one I ever owned was $25 in 1972, but it was missing the right front seat so when we drove anywhere my wife always felt like she had a chauffeur because she had to sit in the back. Imperial Follies !
