65 Imperial disc brake conversion

Post by Rick »

Hello, My 65 Imperial convertible has factory front drum brakes. I’m hoping to convert to front discs, but have had no luck in finding aftermarket conversion kits from Summit, Wilwood etc. Any information on a solution using other Mopar brakes or other options would be greatly appreciated, thank you, Rick

I have a 67 and am working on a conversion kit purchased from AAJ brakes. Roger focuses on the Forward Look Imperials, I've found him to be incredibly helpful. We spent a fair bit of time comparing measurements, for the rears in particular, before he sold the kit to me.

How much was the kit? And did you need to get new custom wheels?

Stock wheels (15") the kit I purchased was the base kit which is the brackets, parts list etc. it was $648.00 for all four corners. The rotors and calipers, lines etc were sourced via Rock Auto and Summit. The Master cylinder needs to be replaced - a smaller bore and no residual check valve and I put on an adjustable proportioning valve (came with the kit) and ditched the distribution block with the idiot light wire.

I bought the basic kit because of shipping costs of rotors and calipers. Since you live there, you may consider the full kit and saving a few trips to the parts store! Good Luck!

I really appreciate the info, our 65 needs the top down and enjoying the open road. You’ve helped make that happen. Thanks again

I am beginning to assemble the parts required to use his kit on my 66 Imperial. Going to purchase his suggested rotors and calipers, etc. But he also suggests dual master cylinder. Which one is right?Does Roger sell a viable Master Cylinder and proportioning valve too? Any tips welcome.
Thanks
Norm

He does sell both, but I went the cheap route to save on shipping.

The Master cylinder should be one with a smaller bore, I've used one off of a 74 B/C body:https://www.manciniracing.com/ristdemacy.html

He sells a basic prop valve like this: https://www.manciniracing.com/intuadprva.html

I've just decided to convert to:https://www.manciniracing.com/wicokntyprva.html

Hope this helps
